One night last week I had an interesting conversation with a friend who asked me many questions about God, Christ and faith. When the conversation ended, she said, “I want to be like you, certain about what you believe.”
My faith comes from years of the Holy Spirit’s revealing Jesus Christ to me through the Scriptures. There is no secret formula. There is no gimmick. There is simply the Word of God speaking through Scripture.
Many of us don’t possess certainty in our faith because we don’t seek God in Christ in the Bible. The Bible exists in the world for one reason and one reason only: to reveal God in Christ. We are not the first generation to struggle with a lack of faith and we won’t be the last. Even Jesus had to address this problem with His contemporaries. He said, “These are the Scriptures that testify about me” (John 5:39).
The Scriptures testify that God became the man Jesus. He walked among us, died for our sins and rose from the dead. The Bible also tells us that we will gain eternal life by believing in Jesus and coming to Him. John declares that his Gospel was “written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name” (20:31).
Certainty of faith comes from meeting God in Christ in the Scriptures through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. You can be sure about what you believe.
